Have you ever seen one of these boxes driving around your neighborhood? In the past few years little wooden structures filled with books have been sprouting up all over Austin. Our curiousity was piqued and we decided to do a little digging. Here’s a picture of a box in Austin:
It turns out that these outdoor bookshelves are part of a movement called Little Free Library. They’re essentially tiny free lending libraries. The idea is that you can take a book, leave a book or do both, so the projects encourage people of every age to read and gives them easy access to books.
There’s something exciting and almost a little magical about coming across one of these little book houses and picking something out. It feels like these days we have unlimited choices via the internet so there is something to be said for a community-driven movement like Little Free Library. You wouldn’t go hunting for a specific book at one of these libraries but hopefully you’ll discover something you didn’t even know you were interested in!
So how can you get involved?
- Build a library for your community
- Find your nearest library and add some of your own books
- Donate to one of the organization’s many projects around the country and the world
